Programme Structure & Content

The MSc in Finance at the University of Leicester is designed to meet the needs of newly qualified graduates setting out in their career and those wishing to reshape their existing careers in the field of financial, risk management and banking industry. The programme does not assume a prior knowledge of the subject area but because of the nature of the subjects covered by the MSc in Finance is best suited to candidates who have a good level of numerical ability.

The Leicester MSc in Finance is a rigorous programme and is both intellectually challenging and ambitious. It will provide students with thorough understanding of the principle methods and techniques of financial management and give them a framework of reference, enabling them to deal with complex financial issues and handle them effectively. The strategic focus of the course will enhance students' ability to analyse any situation and to make sound strategic decisions. The programme is also developmental and encourages practical management skills using various approaches and methods including case studies.

The programme aims to introduce and develop an understanding of the concepts of finance and the role of financial management in a variety of organisations together with an appreciation of finance in a strategic sense. Students will be provided with a stimulating and intellectually challenging management development programme, along with a rigorous education in the concepts and techniques of financial management. The programme aims to advance their career in finance whilst offering scope to pursue academic work in this area.

YEAR ONE >>
  Module 1 – Foundations of Financial Analysis (Months 1 - 4)  
 
This course sets down the fundamental conceptual framework for financial analysis focusing on intertemporal choice; the role and nature of financial markets and institutions; the determination of interest rates; investment and savings decisions and capital budgeting.

 
  Module 2 – Accounting and Financial Statement Analysis (Months 5 - 6)  
 
Financial accounting and reporting; balance sheets; profit and loss; cash flow statements management; financial forecasting and budgeting.

 
  Module 3 – Financial Modelling (Months 7 - 8)  
 
Introduces and develops statistical techniques relevant to modern financial analysis including probability distributions; statistical inference; regression analysis; time series analysis and co- integration.

 
  Module 4 – Corporate Finance (Months 9 - 10)  
 
The firm; equity; issuing shares; cost of issue; rights issues etc; debt; warrants; convertibles; leasing and quasi-debt; valuation of a company; mergers and growth and failure and disinvestment (Z scores etc.).

 
  Module 5 – Strategic Financial Management (Months 11 - 12)  
 
The application of strategic thinking in the context of financial management; growth/share matrix; shareholder value analysis; corporate restructuring; mergers and acquisitions; management buyouts and corporate governance.

 
  Examination 1  
  YEAR TWO >>  
  Module 6 – Public Finance (Months 13 - 14)  
 
Nature of the public sector and taxation; tax bases, tax analysis incidence, shifting etc., taxation and savings, taxation and risk, Value Added Tax, expenditure taxation; company taxation and cost benefit analysis.

 
  Module 7 – International Finance (Months 15 - 16)  
 
Foreign exchange; spot and forward rates; foreign exchange risk management (hedging risk); forward contracts; currency options; international capital budgeting; corporate foreign investment decisions and multinational business finance.

 
  Module 8 – Risk Management (Months 17 - 18)  
 
Managing financial risks; hedging; futures; forwards and swaps; derivatives.

 
  Examination 2  
  Module 9 – Current Topics in Finance (Months 19 - 20)  
 
This course focuses on a number of current topics which will demonstrate where the frontiers of finance research are to be found. There is no written examination for this course. It prepares students for the research project/dissertation.

 
  Management Project (Months 19 - 24)  
     
 

The Leicester MSc programme provides students with maximum flexibility to allow candidates to remain in employment or professional practice while maintaining their earning power during their course of study. The programme also gives maximum enhancement of career prospects from continued experience and new qualifications, with minimum disruption of planned career path. It is a cost effective means of achieving additional skills and qualifications

Students will be supported by both the University of Leicester and Hartford Institute Singapore through various flexible mode of learning, including specially designed and written course materials, textbooks and additional readings and e-learning academic supports.

User-friendly online library and resource centre is available for students, together with an interactive learning environment directly supported by the University.


Assessment

Students will be assessed by combination of assessment methods as follows:

  • 1 assignment for each core module
  • 1 case study examination after Module 5
  • 1 case study examination after Module 8
  • 1 management project


Admission Criteria

  • A good second-class honours degree from a recognised university or a professional equivalent
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience
  • Students with non-standard academic backgrounds but with suitable management or professional experience will be considered by the University on a case-by-case basis
